Ways to Identify Vintage Woodard Patio Furniture

Since Woodard is known for their excellent quality of patio furniture, you’re going to want to make sure that you’re getting the real deal rather than a copycat. Fortunately, there are some ways that you can identify vintage furniture.

Identifying Woodard Materials

When it comes to identifying vintage Woodard patio furniture, the first thing to look for is the material. Woodard was one of the first companies to use wrought iron to construct their patio furniture, so look for heavy, wrought iron frames and designs. Woodard also used woven wicker; you can identify this by looking for a tight weave with no signs of unraveling. Of course, there are also pieces made of aluminum, which is a lightweight and durable metal, and aluminum pieces will have a distinct silver-grey color.

These features can help you identify a vintage Woodard piece, but you should also look at the condition of the piece itself. Woodard furniture is known for its durability but can still show signs of wear and tear over time. Look for rust, scratches, and signs of age to help determine if the piece is a true vintage. Just keep in mind that a piece of furniture can be authentic Woodard furniture, and the condition can still be poor due to the previous owners.

Recognizing Woodard Characteristics and Style

Woodard furniture is often characterized by its classic and timeless look. It features intricate lattice designs, filigree detailing, and elegant curves and accents. It is also known for its signature scrolled arms and curved legs, a signature feature of the brand. When it comes to chairs and loungers, look for scrolled arms and bowed back slats. The accent pieces, such as tables and ottomans, should also have a classic look and feature details such as ball-and-claw feet or an intricately designed top.

The frames are often ornately designed and feature intricate details such as scrolls and swirls. Pay attention to the overall design and look for distinguishing features that make it stand out. Additionally, color is another key element when identifying Woodard furniture. Woodard patio furniture typically comes in neutral shades like beige, taupe, or cream, although brighter colors are common. By keeping an eye out for these key characteristics, you can easily identify vintage Woodard patio furniture and be confident that you are getting the real deal.

Look for Embossing

When identifying vintage Woodard patio furniture, look for the signature markings. Woodard patio furniture typically includes a stamped plate or medallion with the company logo, which is sometimes visible on the piece. It is also important to look for the Woodard name stamped or embossed on the frame. Sometimes, you can find a metal tag that usually carries an identifying number on the furniture.

Sometimes, the label may also include the date of production, the style name, and the country of origin. These identifiers are key for verifying that the piece is a genuine vintage Woodard item. You can typically find this stamp or this embossed logo on the underside of the furniture, usually on the legs or the under area where the cushion would go. The embossed stamp will be the major component in determining if it’s genuine Woodard patio furniture and not some knockoff.

Check the Quality

As stated above, when you’re looking to identify vintage Woodard patio furniture, the first thing to consider is the materials used. This will be one of the most important components, as this will help you get an indicator of the quality of the furniture itself. If you want to find the real deal on Woodard furniture, you will have to look into the quality. This is one of the leading indicators regarding Woodard patio furniture. Even if there are knock-offs, the quality will not lie.

You will want to inspect the hardware used to assemble the furniture. Woodard pieces are constructed using heavy-duty hardware such as nuts, bolts, and rivets. All hardware should be securely fastened and rust-free (unless it’s very old). This indicates that the piece is well-made and of a higher quality. By carefully examining these elements, you can be sure you are getting an authentic vintage Woodard piece.

The Most Common Mistake to Avoid When Identifying Vintage Woodard Patio Furniture

One of the biggest mistakes people make when looking into Woodard patio furniture would be the condition of the vintage patio furniture itself. You have to remember patio furniture isn’t always going to look as good as it did on day one. Unless the previous owners took exceptional care of the furniture, you could expect to see some hints of wear and tear.

Even with vintage Woodard patio furniture, you can expect rust, paint chippings, or areas that look a little rougher. This doesn’t mean it’s not an authentic piece from Woodard. Also, even if something looks like it’s in exceptional condition, it doesn’t immediately mean that it’s a fake. It’s common for vintage furniture to be repainted or retouched to look more modern or at least look like there is less wear. One more thing to notice would be certificates of authenticity. Woodard does not give this out, so if you see a seller offering this, you can consider this a red flag.

How to Preserve Vintage Woodard Outdoor Sets?

Preserving vintage Woodard outdoor sets is an important task for those who have the privilege of owning these timeless pieces. Woodard outdoor sets are made of durable materials, but they can still be prone to damage if not kept in the right conditions. Even though they’re made from wrought iron and aluminum doesn’t immediately mean they will be fine against the elements that weather offers.

To ensure that your vintage pieces look their best, there are a few steps you can take to preserve them. These include proper cleaning and storage, using protective treatments, and avoiding over-exposure to the elements (including the sun). With extra care and attention, you can keep your vintage Woodard outdoor sets looking as good as new for years to come.

Overall, it’s not going to be an impossible task to get your hands on one of these fine pieces, but you need to understand that there are some knockoffs out there, especially with highly sought-after vintage Woodard furniture. In general, just make sure to do your research, as this is going to be key to deciding what to buy!
